PORTRAIT OF A LIFETIME
BOOTNIC

Bar Blu, Rhyl

Chalk ‘n’ cheese, or ham ‘n’ cheese if you like! But that’s the difference between the Bootnic (pic below) I saw a couple of years ago to the one playing in Bar Blu tonight. The main difference is that the singer / guitarist has either suspiciously morphed into a member of Valleum, or he is a member of Valleum; either moonlighting or a permanent fixture in Bootnic. Gone are the predictable cover versions, gone are the tokenistic Welsh-by-numbers stuff from their Bai A’r Gam album and here we have a raw but ready sound with an Anglesey tinge and a purpose.

Still in shock from Bellamy and Riise knocking the stuffing out of Barcelona this review will be as brief as my memory of the evening.
’I’m gonna fuck your pet rabbit in front of you.’
Portrait of A Lifetime’s front-psycho Jamie Burne (top pic) didn’t actually say that, but that’s what it felt like as his congregation gathered round only to be scattered across Bar Blu as his Tasmanaian Captain Caveman Devil posture rattled and leered and screamed and shrieked.
‘I’m going to give you something, I’m going to slice your brain sideways and fry the pieces in some out-of-date soy sauce and feed it to that rabbit.’
Err… he didn’t say that either, I made it up (perhaps I should have a lie down). With the longest microphone lead in the business Jamie utilised its full length to reach the parts other singers cannot reach, as he lept forward to spike your drink with madness and then be gone in a flash. The Smiths t-shirt he was wearing is just a cover, he is the Anti-Morrissey, he doesn’t hang DJs he snorts them!
Live, Portrait are total mayhem with an incohearant message, they are tamer in the studio, so here’s to a live recording please!. Break beating for you to break and beat your heads to. Embrace the noise, the sound, the feeling, the need and you will find not your karma, that’s too mild, this is your vindaloo..!
‘This is The Prodigy’ someone piped up near to me, yes, but you know even if PoAL were as big as they that Jamie would still be in the crowd spraying spit and sweat in your face, as the band bulldozed their way through you and your ilk

You missed a great performance - I do have music by Portrait and Bootnic, or you can go to their MySpace pages...

Neil - do you keep a record of the reviews on this forum?

Just wonder what would happen if this board went wrong.

I was actually thinking that yesterday - I think it is a Google board, so it should be OK - but I do have a back up on my hard drive - just in case...
