THE 4 STICKS
METHOD IN MADNESS
SAFETY IN NUMBERS

Billys, Rhyl
27.06.07

(review by neil crud)

Escapees from Denbigh Safety In Numbers gave me the first impression of noisy tuneless crap, then I suddenly remembered being in a pub in Galway with a jukebox blasting out; there was a poster on a wall with an old lady looking very startled, the caption said: IF IT'S TOO LOUD THEN YOU'RE TOO OLD.
I snapped out of my duffer state, making a mental note not to wear slippers round the house anymore and recalled that I brought myself up on a diet of this rubbish and although I find myself reaching for that Pink Floyd CD far more than that '20 Monster Metal Mayhems' compilation these days, it was OK!
SIN played covers I guess, judging by the bouncing locals, either that or they have a fanatical following who know all the words... No.. it was covers... OK for a giggle. Singing by both guitarists wasn't a strong point and they should stick to screaming; its much better! Or better still - get a frontman!

From the sunny shores of Leicester come metal mirthing mummyfuckers Method In Madness... Now that's more like it! Link2wales detainee MWJ would give you the exact genre right down to the tuned down power chord, but to your average Fosters supping bootboy this is hard rocking punk influenced thrashed out stuff minus the cliches. Very enjoyable and a lesson to other aspiring metal bands. Most of the material was showcasing their forthcoming LP - hard, fast and powerful. Listen, learn and enjoy... I've reviewed The 4 Sticks before and prior this gig they were quick to point out that the continual fact over their tender age is always a factor in reviews (almost a novelty) and it bores them silly; particularly when they were born into rock'n'roll and spent their entire youth being shuttled up and down the country in the back of smelly vans as their father soundchecked etc. Being the spawn of 80s Rhyl band Ocean Rane has its plus points, you get to learn the pitfalls before you leap over the edge. You also have the inevitable influence - Ocean Rane were so close to The Beatles that one of them quit the band and married a Japanese girl called Yolky Oh-No...!
Steve Sync said The 4 Sticks are still going through their Hamburg phase (before the wigs and pencil ties turn up), but there is obviously more to them. Very clever songwriting (Ocean Rane were never this good!) in a very rock'n'roll style, almost like T-Rex b-sides spread with Jam. A smattering of covers (4 I think), neatly slotted into a punchy but sharp repertoire, long enough for you to get what their doing and short enough to keep you alert.
