Sonic Boom Six at Academy 3 30/11/07
« Thread Started on Dec 1, 2007, 2:12pm »

"Since when did Ska become so bloody camp" was the only thing on my mind watching a tiny bit of the first band (whos name has past me by. and the hideously fake smiled GROWN AT HOME and the arrogant bunch of tossers FLAMING TSUNAMI but luckily Sonic Boom Six Shat all over the other bands and were skatastic (as usual!)

so, GROWN AT HOME hit the stage after watching a very talented singer in the last band pick up a trombone, then playing a saxophone! Grown at home i found rather mediocore, they played no-frills Ska with the sort of swagger that tells you they think this is the best music you will ever hear.....its really not. The Stiffleresque singer didnt do them any favours glaring at members of the audience and pulling his lips apart trying to make them smile, if hed done that to me i wouldve lobbed my pint at the short wearing bastard! Being a Trumpet player i need to talk about Horns. Grown At Home had great horns (odd, a valve trombone and a flugal horn!) they were really good players, yet all they did was play shitty fanfares, why dont they do any solos, thats what i wanted to hear, why have horns if your not gonna use them properly! grrrrrr!!!! they attemped to have a Hug pit! naff ska.....thats all this is really.

FLAMING TSUNAMI walked on chanting "2 GIRLS 1 CUP! 2 GIRLS 1 CUP! 2 GIRLS 1 CUP! 2 GIRLS 1 CUP!" Unfortunatly i have had the privalage of witnessing that website and hope no one reads this at work, watches it and gets sacked! so that was a funny start to there set "our set is dedicated to Lemonparty.org" again, i have had the unprivalige of seeing that too! ....urgh! then out of nowhere they started there noise, which can only be discribed as Napalm death meets capdown meets Kilswitch Engage meets High school musical! its really didnt work for me, the keyboard player had a sweat band on and a dodgey afro and was doing star jumps and disco moves, he really needed a slap, especially when he sed "manchester people are far too cool for us" and slagging off Grown at home "pussy ass ska, we're hardcore, there wall of death was aload of shit" and there Singer was like jello Biafra in a parallel universe who did decide to be sponsored by macdonalds! (thats quite good for me....) even the horn section werent very beasty! they did a song called "Bomb the whitehouse".....seemed abit childish and all shock value to me. This guy outside sed to me "you'll never see me again, but make sure you remember how shit that new york band was!" they went down like a fart in a lift.

So the mighty Boom came on and the place exploded! they get better everytime i see them, theres something special about seeing them in manchester as they kept saying "we fucking love manchester!" it was mainly stuff off there new album, i didnt know these songs but they still had a great beat to them, getting me skanking round like a mental at the bus stop. They did "Piggy in the middle" and "bigger than punk rock" and they got the hairs standing up, the crowd were going ape shit. They were joined by all the Horn sections from all the other bands that night, which made it that bit extra special. The only thing is they werent on very long at all, came on late then they had to end early coz of this shitty curfew bollocks. They werent aloud to do an encore after playing the timeless classic "Monkey See Monkey Do" and a new belter that will be a monkey see Monkey do classic in a few years. Layla came back on and sed "fuck them, were doing an encore anyway, this is for manchester, its a cover by Operation Ivy (at which point a lump in my trousers was established) its called "Sound System" (the lump then errupted!!) there was a mass stage invasion, and halfway through the dickhead bouncer kicked everyone off and they pulled the plug!!! bastards!

if you arent into this new Ska stuff (im not particually) you should definatly make the effort to see Sonic Boom Six as they are one of the most exciting bands around at the moment. It was even worth seeing the dire stuff before them just to get that hairs stand up skank feeling the Boom can do to you. Personally, its inspiried me to pick up the guitar again, write some songs, and put them on wax! (and use my horn abilitys to there full potential!!) shamefully i couldnt even remember what the last punk gig was that i went to see before last night.......so i am going to see Goldblade next friday! (might even write a shitty review with no pictures and spelling mistakes and useless information again too!)

Sonic Boom Six are fucking ace! I'm definatley going to try and get the new album! I saw them with Failsafe and Random Hand in Manchester last year at Satan's Hollow and it was fucking great!

I have also had the misfortune of seeing some of the aforementioned websites as well...
