(Review by Richard Hibbert of Academy Images)
Tonight’s gig saw the welcome return of the Deeside based trio – Slightly Generic who took to the stage to rapturous applause from the large audience. Their 7 track set (Wait for me, Cold Calling, Change the Locks, Family Reunion, ELR, 3 out of 5 and Ickys) went down a storm. Their live appearances may be limited recently due to band members’ thirst for academic achievement, however, their passion, energy, enthusiasm and sense of humour remains undiminished. Their performance was all the more remarkable considering that they’d only managed a few hours practice time beforehand - higher education commitments may be diminishing their ‘live time’ - but it does not seem to be detrimentally affecting their music, as this was by far the best performance I’ve seen them give. Vocally strong with powerful lead, combining with tight, energetic drumming and wonderfully rhythmic bass lines, they really rocked. To describe this evenings’ performance, as a warm up for those that followed, would be an injustice, it was more than that, far more! A really enjoyable set, which was over all too quickly – well done guys.
Making their first appearance at McLeans were Manchester based band - The Vehicle Field - this quintet ( Ryan – vocals and synth, Gray – guitar and synth, Badger – bass and ‘screams’, Pete – guitar and Luke – drums and backing vocals), who combined to deliver a 6 track set [ Kill the Queen and Crown the King, Three Can Take Fifteen, Lights Unfold, Tearing Through the Motions, Mark My Words and Attack! Retreat ] made a very impressive debut, with an interesting style, superb interplay between Ryan’s powerful vocals and Badger’s primeval screams, underpinned with some very solid instrumental performances, powerful lead, thunderous bass riffs, that you not only heard but physically experienced and really effective synth. Their upcoming show list (see website) suggests that they are much in demand, and on this evening’s performance, no wonder.
The Day Before Mortality - Scott, Jimmy, James Peglar, John and Mike from Mold, were on blistering form as they closed out the evening. Their set, full of aggression, passion, energy and angst was once again of a very high standard delivering exactly what their growing army of fans came to hear. Scott’s aggressive, sinister lead vocals were exquisitely underpinned by Mike’s melodic timbre, which worked really effectively although in stark contrast to each other, the combination is somewhat entrancing. This band is growing both in musical stature and in stage presence, an essential combination to maintain their mercurial career development, which on tonight’s performance seems to be well on track.
