Strange as it seems, this was one gig I wasn’t looking forward to reviewing. I was dreading slagging off the band and risk running the gauntlet against the Meliden Mafia.
Two years ago the band sprang onto the scene with swagger and spunk. The music was fresh and alive and they got up the noses of anyone with nostrils. Remember the Pigstock fiasco, the spats at Hendre Hall, the cocky couldn’t-give-a-fuck attitude?
Leading up to this gig I was expecting the same stuff; yes, last year’s music (or 2 years ago now) isn’t as fresh anymore. Time is relentless and moves on and on.
I love being proved wrong. Der Bomber hit Blu like an incendiary device with mainly new songs that punched you between the eyes.
What’s changed?
The song writing has matured, the band has matured – they’re still cocky scally twats, but they have every right to be.
Their third drummer in as many years makes all the difference, and crossing that great divide from punk to indie is Dave Cox sat on the stool. A busy man with his own band, Global Parasite, a broken hand, urinating in public and an ASBO to contend with, Dave has upped the tempo of Der Bomber and they deliver the goods in pristine condition to a large and hungry crowd.
Very similar to Penny Rimbaud from Crass in his military style drumming Dave’s contributions are almost in contrast to the guitar and bass work of the band, and yet compliment that yobbish element.
It works really well, and the 9 or 10 months we’ve spent Der Bomberless have been long and barren, hope we get some new quality recordings.
Expect rucks of gigs and gigs with rucks.
I raise my broken glass…
