i believe that an album is a concept, u shouldnt download it without having the sleeve and lyrics and thank you notes and anything else that makes it a package , there no be no point whatever in downloading a whole crass album!!!!!! or downloading metal box buy PIL or Frankchrist without the penis landscape poster!!!! buying compalations is much more of a reward discovering new bands rather than randomly downloading any band from a massive search engine.

I agree 100% about the whole package,I've even bought albums just for the sleeves,Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day by Man with the brilliant pop up map of Wales being a prime example,I also buy records from charity shops/car boots with terrible sleeves that I'm quite proud of,got a fantastic Lionel Blair aerobic album recently with him wearing a sweater & the tinyest pair of white shorts that are almost illegal.I keep meaning to one day put them on the wall of the shop just to see people's reaction!
In my last post I think I meant to say tantamount not paramount didn't I,that'll learn to me try & use big words

Quote from 'Green Dragon' earlier on this thread-
'Here's something else for you Iwan ...did you know that record companies at one time tried to get second hand record shops closed for illegally distributing records. Seems they didn't like the idea of anybody making money out of "their" product if they weren't getting a share'
On the subject of record companies - they're not ALL bastards, but the major labels definitely have sociapathic disorders. The smaller labels very often help artists.
I understand that downloads have taken us back to the glory days of 'tape trading', but they don't earn independent artists much extra cash - most stuff ends up being duplicated and handed out for free- quite often by the artists who made it in the first place. I'm all for the 'underground scene', but why sabotage your own record sales? Music has become very 'de-valued'.
When I worked at HMV I lost count of the amount of customers who said 'That costs too much - my mate can rip it for nout'. Legally it's the same as shoplifting but no-one gives a fuck. It's become so commonplace that even the legal suits can't enforce it - too big a problem to even think about.
I still don't know of a format that is flawless. It always gets abused by someone - Usually the record label and the public. Musicians are notoriously crap at business and get ripped off all the time. There's tons of musicians in North Wales giving their music away for free and playing unpaid gigs.
Another thing about downloads - I've lost count of the amount of bands who release their own material on unregistered labels (no PRS/MCPS). A lot of people applaud this sort of thing but there's one problem - you don't get paid for airplay (it's a lot of cash if you're popular). PRS won't chase it up. Downloads are making this situation worse because this unregistered music is being snapped up by more people for more purposes and no-one is paying for it.
Net result - People now EXPECT music to be free.
If I had an answer I'd be raking it in (probably at the expense of some purist musican).
Don't get me started on myspace...

Earlier Mark wrote - ....... some of my favourite times was skiving off work whilst driving round the country to find the local inde record shop in town x or y, and purchasing whatever obscure gems you might find there. trouble was if i went back months later you'd often find that you'd got their best stuff (to your tastes) and the stock never changed again. I know that's not true at pinhead and will really have to visit again presently, i'm already gathering my part-exies! Mark it'd be nice to see you again,if it helps (& this applies to Matt also now he's got a deck!) you can browse the majority of my vinyl in my ebay shop - www.stores.ebay.co.uk/pinhead-recordsIt was nice of you to mention my ever changing stock, something I pride myself on & the reason I'll probably never make on money out of it as all profits are used for buying new stock which gives me a bigger thrill than selling stuff, again leading us back to the old vinyl/cd vs download debate.Like Mark said there's nothing better than hunting around record shops/fairs etc & finding a gem,I can't quite imagine anyone could get the same thrill from scrolling through a database??
