Hero In Error, Red Enemy, Famine
The Village, Dublin
Sonic Boom 6, Paranoid Visions, Chewing On Tinfoil
The Pint, Dublin
24/7/10
So I volunteered for an expenses paid trip to Dublin and after fulfilling my civic duties listening to the Mayor of South Dublin trying to persuade some allotment holders to start fires on the hillside overlooking the city, in an effort to distract Juventus from their inevitable destruction of Shamrock Rovers I was left with the evening to entertain myself.
Hadn’t planned ahead so a trip to an internet café revealed the options of Ireland Maiden which would could have been entertaining but I chose instead to check out some new bands with an EP release show for some local metal/hardcore bands
The venue was only a short walk to the south from the centre where I was staying, finding it was easy enough but then I had negotiate two alleys to find the entrance hidden round the back somewhere. Oo-er. Inside it reminded me a bit of the Old Angel in Nottingham, a good set up of stage, sound and lights to offset the scandalous though universally expensive drink prices.
Opening band Famine were just closing their set when I arrived, so not much chance to appreciate their crunchy metallic yet melodic hardcore, and muse on the evocative name for an Irish band and the singer who obviously is far from suffering from it himself.
Next, Red Enemy, from an even more metallic angle with a recurring theme of staccato riff breakdowns with a fair technical mix of faster stuff in the mean time, some really nice fat bass tones, prowling vocalist combining gruff roars with more of a spoken style. Not bad.
Finally Hero In Error, gathering a good crowd of support and obviously having got some good status from supporting touring bands locally. They showed loads of energy weaving through their set, upped the tempo to a pretty blistering metalcore, though the impassioned singer kept a grip on the melodies running through too. They threw in a cover of some metal band I felt I should have known but all their set was equally well received. Good stuff all in all, and I was happy to pick up a copy of their ep., during the purchase of which it was pointed out to me that there was now another gig on the other side of the Liffey where everyone was off to. Ah well, when in Dublin…
Still, at this time of night it was a bit of a stagger and I managed to miss the venue at first despite directions but eventually got sorted into the large upstairs of an old pub. Again things are up and running with some pretty laid back, stripped down ska from Chewing On Tinfoil, featuring the singer of Hero in Error on now guitar who’s obviously made swifter progress than me. It’s fine within the genre but not of much interest to me, their Billy Bragg cover probably goes down best of their set.
A much more interesting prospect was Paranoid Visions. Fronted by a hunched, stary-eyed frontman taking his lead from Mr Rotten, flanked by two attractive ladys to shout along with, at first I thought this could be a bit of a cliched performance. I was won over in no time at all though as there was a thumping hypnotic feel to their rants and chants, over old school anarcho-crusty hardcore. All the intro banter was lines from the following songs, really helped getting their meaningful messages across with a sense of threat. They’re over in the UK at Rebellion and beyond so check them out
I hadn’t known when I got here but it turned out to be Sonic Boom 6 headlining, not sure whether prior knowledge would have swayed my decision to come. When they played Conwy Civic Hall a few years back I was unimpressed, feeling it was all very contrived in a pop-hop punk fashion. Tonight was better though, a lot more variety put into their show and lots of energy inevitably. The girl singer was too yappy for me though and I thought the guy on bass did a better job when he took the lead vocal, but it’s just down to taste and their mix of ska, hip hop and punk is definitely tunes for folks to bounce to. I bounced out onto the streets for a good 4 hours kip before catching the ferry back.
