Dunno - you've obviously noticed summat or you wouldn't beg the question. The kids seem to be into the punk-emo thing as they have been for 10 years - the alt radio just plays endless guitar bands - most of which all sound the same... fuckin hell - I'm sounding more like my parents everyday... Gotta go now and walk the dogs, before I settle down to watch Big Brother in my dressing gown with a cup of Horlicks... (or is that whore licks?) Dufferdom at its best...

Guitar band music seems to have become alot more socially acceptable. I get to sometimes have my head drilled with Radio fucking one all day in work, and its generally guitar band music that gets played along with music that is just downright fuckin stupid. Emo...its just a fuckin franchise in my opinion. Its an image. Its myspace.com. Its sell sell sell. Maybe i just want to hate any popular culture, i dunno.

Everyone seems to be into the indie bits these days!!
I think we start a new scene where we dress like cornish farmers.
It'll be woollen jumpers and and pipes they'll be selling in topshop now!

i just think simplistic music is why the scence has changed, just like the late 80's went from big haired fret wanking metal bands ruling all, to skinny cardigan wearing fannies who could hardly play erasing the likes of guns and roses and motley crue!! think about it!!! two years ago MUSE (FRET WANKERS) were the biggest british band, now its ARCTIC MONKEYS/SNOW PATROL/KAISERCHIEFS (WHO CAN HARDLY PLAY).
I think the scene is much better now, than its EVER been! with US (Homespun), the Racketears and der bomber all capable of getting signed! (im not havin a pop at any bands i didnt mention, im just being a realist!)

i dont really think theres that much of a change in the scene, apart from the fact that theres a hell of a good opportunity now for bands, like Mase (gigs and studios), or weekly billy's sports bar gigs and the live recordings from that (the "live from billys podcast"), or the weekly gigs every friday and saturday at the juice bar in colwyn bay, or the whole complete control music organisation throwing money at bands to record professional demos, or the party in the park in colwyn bay, a 5 stages all dayer with young local bands being given the chance to play to a potential few thousand people (whats the max capacity for that gig anyone know?), not to mention myspace and link2wales. an i know im forgettin things here, but you get the picture...

What have people noticed with regards the change in peoples tastes? Well... Until very recently I worked for HMV. In the 2 years I worked for them, I learned a lot about the music buying public. There are loads of 'emo' people with £100 haircuts from Toni & Guy. They've been around for a few years now. They listen to generic music and assume life is an American teen movie from 1987, which is pretty sad if you live somewhere like Ashford. They say 'Duuuude' a lot. There are lots of 'NME' type people who listen to so-called 'indie' bands like Iron and Wine. They scratch their chins in contemplation of the latest 'big thing'. They buy the sort of albums you listen to once and forget about (but make your CD collection look cutting edge when fellow students visit). We also had the 'bling people' in the urban section (what the piss is 'urban' supposed to mean?). R&B, rap, drum n bass - it's all as massively popular as it ever was. Metal is still hugely popular too. It has refused die since 1968 - you can't kill the metal! However, all of these scenes are slowly being usurped by a disturbing new craze. A lot of the young 'scensters' these days steal their music via downloads, so why bother buying an album? Alarmingly this has led to old duffers reclaiming thier turf in record shops. Whilst at HMV, I sold bucketloads of Barry Manilow, Hayley Wenestra, Bryn Terfel, Aled Jones - you name it. The blue-rinsers go mad for that stuff and since they've all finally bought CD players they visit HMV a lot. I assume it's the same at Virgin. Oddly, this new wave of old school often music out-sells the bright young things in the music charts. The music retailers are only too happy to supply this 'music'. So next time you're wondering why Clive Dunn or St Winifred's choir are headlining Glastonbury, don't say I didn't warn you - Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey have already played there, so it's only a matter of time.

NME bands like "Iron & Wine"?
Thats more of an uncut band i'd say. Surely NME bands would be Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles and other such overrated generic haircut music.
Iron & Wine is one guy, an acoustic guitar and a fuck off beard. Not really what the NME is about.

I didn't actually write 'NME bands like Iron & Wine'. I wrote that many NME-type people listened to them.
The indie chin scratchers seemed to like them a lot & I just used them as an example. Their music has been hijacked by elitist music snobs. That's not a comment on what they do as much as how they are perceived. I called them a 'so-called' indie band because people mistakenly called them indie and I hate the word 'indie' - It doesn't have anything to do with music.
Arctic Monkeys are getting a bit of a rough deal here aren't they? I really TRIED to hate Arctic Monkeys, but it was impossible. The lyrics are great and I like the unusual arrangements in the music. Should I seek professional help?
It's arguable that Artic Monkeys and Der Bomber have a lot in common musically.
As for Babyshambles, Kooks etc, I totally agree. That music is very boring.

I agree with you there Duncan, I've tried to hate the Arctics as well, and for your same reasons like them. And Der Bomber for that matter - just a pity the Sheffield lads got there first as both bands probably sprung up around the same time and obviously independent of each other.
Has anyone noticed that The Editors and Interpol are actually the same band yet...?

This has wasted my time, scene is a word of division, so what if some soft twat spends half his wages on his hairdo if it makes him feel good (miserable) then who's to point. The way I see it in my town (COLWYN BAY BAY BAY BAY BAYBY) is that the muso's and misfit's chill together and perform together it's like a battle with the cheese clubs to get heads in the door on a friday or saturday night, punks chill with rappers, rappers with emo's emo's with funkers so forth and so on... Speakers Corner has a lot to answer for as it is the mecca where all artists meet, hang out, just to chat and maybe even get a date. You know what Im saying or maybe you don't maybe I dont know what Im saying, maybe I dont know what Im replying too but felt as if I was missing out on putting my point of view forward and had to splurge a point of view on something I dont see.
who's right who's wrong who's cool who's generic its all opinionated, I wish every striving artist the best but don't let it get to your head when you get a thumbs up its a long way to go till youve achieved what you really want.
as my man del say's
"people think they make music still But music is there with out you or me we just manipulate For better or worse so let it situate"
