It's the start of another year and I've spent the last few days thinking about the highs and lows of 2008, last year we saw the loss of some more great local venues, speakers corner being the most sorely missed gem but over the border in rhyl they also lost 'blu' forever and a number of others including 'frames' which surely must win the award for the biggest fuck up of 2008, 2 years in the making and only 2 weeks to be killed off by a DJ. what went wrong there? then there was the pier or rather there wasn't the pier, crud no doubt also remembers the late great pier and I ask again what went wrong there?
2008 also saw one of the funniest online slanging matches, stand up Juz and take a bow, but wait Juz is 'street', he won't want the award so it goes to Matt instead, an equally worthy winner but wait again, he won't want it either, I mean there's cred and there's cred so Juz it is then.
We also mourned the loss of one of our great hopes ' Der Bomber', drummers eh? I think it was the park gig in 2007 that Der Bomber got us all jizzed up and then 2008 comes and nothing happens, well apart from that demo, you know the one, the waltz in the middle, the fucking belter, the one that made you think 'fuck me, that's good, oh shit you messed us about didn't you, like an episode of jeremy kyle but let's not forget the party on the beach, it was sad to see the lads resorting to that, oh my god, party on the beach equals 'homespun' now that was both funny as fuck but also highly insulting. So, witnessing Der Bomber fade out and feeling almost tearful albeit in a slightly pissed state, I took shelter and solice in the bar with the mrs and missed one or two other bands, apologies to 'carpet' but was I glad to catch 'the spun', now it was the big one for them, new record deal and world domination on the horizon but wait, isn't that 'failsafe', oh yes mumma, it surely was and were'nt they just fucking amazing, but who cares anyway when we've got the spuns bass player staggering about with a half empty bottle of bourbon, taking random photo friendly swigs as soon as anyone looks at him, oh pllleeeeease, don't even go there, there was someone with a video camera to capture the action (hint, put it up on youtube, the whole lot) and the lads kick us off with the now ancient badman and badman's a good song, no, actually it's an excellent song but it's been so lonely in that set list for so long that it sounds like a cover now and the bassist is so desperate to be the baddest man it hurts, a few songs in and there's a small crowd gathered in front of the stage behind the barriers, again, barriers, why? oh ppllleeeease, no, no no, there should be signs saying don't feed the ego but wait, someone's dancing, she knows all the words, it can't be, it is you know, it's a genuine, real life, shameless audience plant, it's that most embarrassing of all things that are embarr assing, it's a star struck girlfriend pretending to be carried away with the moment, singing loudly and jumping about for the camera dressed up in cheesy spunware stripes, oh pllleeease no, no, no I can't take any more, I mean why not get your aunt or mum involved too? would that be any less cringe worthy? but wait, the gigs cut short, the bass players really pissed off and pathetically pleads 'have you heard this?, they want us to get off', there's a stumble, a swift girly swing of the bass and a bit of angry stomping and his guitar catches on the gazebo pole which wobbles out of control and sprays rain water everywhere, he grabs the mic, there's an inaudible angry rant and for me the whole thing just totally fucks up (c'mon uncle foster youtube it) The somber sadness of 'der bombers' goodbye duet was one of the truly saddest things i've ever seen on a local stage but it was overshadowed in the sadness stakes by the spun boys especially when the sound guy was clearly heard by all bollocking them for mistreating his equipment and so it all goes to shit, so this is homespun now, this is our very own next big thing, the areas first 'signed band' for years and we should all be proud and some of us were once, you know I bought the alblum first time round and the re-release, I was happy to pay full price on the door for me and the mrs and sprogs but today, in the rain we're all cringing, today Homespun are exposed as the David Brent of the north wales music scene and it's such a sad scene, but at least they've got mr rock'n'roll on bass and a record deal to brag about but wait have we got a record deal or have we got one of those online mp3 record deals? where's my advance? why am I still posting 'please buy our album' notices on myspace, why don't the other bands with record deals have to do it, what's that? oh no.no no not another fucking penny dropping. A record deal? yeah me too and the three bears.
Next up, Valleum, fucking spellbound 'rainbow hours', more more more, oh no that wasn't party on the beach, no, the yanky Beatles were headlining that one, and fucking ace they were too, but it did confuse me a bit, what with it being homespuns gig and all but, who cares anyway, actually, I do, I hate being bullshitted, you know, before der bomber came along i was rooted in your corner with my fingers crossed for years, you had a top name producer working on demos, you were the kings of the early days of 'blu' you had the world at your feet, what the fuck happend ?
So we head off to 'Tal-y-Bont and discover that we can succeed, or rather dave can, stand up mr cox you're going home with the best promotor award of 2008. it's been an excellent year for dave, he's dodged the sniffers, been on a mad punkathon across Europe with the parasite and managed to pull off the highlight of the year, the dirty weekend, top marks, fun for all ages and still fucking noisy too, good times, good to see old pals and one or two real life punk heroes but I'll be frank, if i was you Dave, i'd be a little less consumed with the l 'conspiracy theory' stuff this year because it's all a bit shit really but all in all, 2008 was your friend. Global Parasite, they came they saw and they took the piss out of Juz and daves thing on the radio was pure gold, but who cares anyway, they had a great year, worked the fucking arses off and take first prize for the most 'pro-active' band award so well done to matt and gaz too but Hubble Hubble Hubble what can I say? does the phrase 'bandwagon' not hurt your ears, stop it now, who killed the funk man?
Over the blue bridge somewhere, we've got 'Lucien' or whatever, can't say i've seen them much but from the stuff posted on youtube it all looks like a good but rather expensive laugh with some small seeds of potential but be careful out there, there are real-deal bands out there and it's not good practice to be tagged as the 'comedy' act within the dark world of hard core, i'm thinking 'bottles of piss' and fair game here, catch my drift.
Who else done ok in 2008? Anti Virus, tut tut tut? maybe Sona ? I'm not sure about Sona, pub band? a student thing? maybe? I know one thing though, they're still not very good, and I mean that in the nicest possible way but 2008 saw no real improvements, they're still just a bit dull with no real identity, I don't know, just something missing, same goes for our very own 'freaky peach', just not very good really but who cares anyway it can't all be good, well actually, mates or not, freaky peach are just terrible and so get my 'worst band' of 2008 award, sorry lads but someone has to win it.
Crud says gintis are recording an album featuring trumpets, that should be interesting but one day, hopefully during 2009 the real mr gintis will stand up and clear the decks and surround himself with others of equal talent, it's there, it's hiding under a heap of other peoples shite most of the time but it's still there all the same, nevertheless i'm still looking forward to the next round of gintis anyway, 2008 was quiet for them but hopefully they'll make more noise this year.
Carpet are also in the album making mood so I'm sure we're all in for a guitar fest treat, bless 'em, john is just john but carpet are where it's at and Halloween scared me too,I'd forgotten how good it felt, great show lads, d'you remember the breeding ground gigs? well fly once more young rock stallions and dress the air waves with a quality hessian backed number, preferably fuzzed up around the edges with a good twist in the middle, yes I know that's a bit shit but it's the best I could muster, I did contemplate a wool mix joke but fuck it.
Prestatyns '4 sticks' are a shameless bunch of retro twats and I avoid them like the plague, oh no no no I won't get sucked in again but the lure is fucking strong and I just know I will succumb, it'll all end in tears and then i'll start pissing them off by dissing them online and all that shite but I refuse to be let down again (der bomber you broke my heart, twats!) but then again, the king is dead so long live the king and that video with crud was a fooooking straight ahead gold star and credit where it's due that song's the bollocks too lads, bit old school 'Crowes', bit MC5 with a subtle hint of Dylan and that track Walton put out on the radio had a really sweet, trippy Velvets/Dylan vibe running through it too and I'm a sucker for that shit but it's all class lads, so here's hoping you keep up the tempo in 2009, take a leaf out of the GP book and make it happen because it really could, so, congratulations, you win the 2008 award for best new comers, 2008 was good but I think 2009 could be fucking daft for the 4 sticks.
Valleum, for me take it hands down, best album, best live act and the overall 2008 best band in north wales award, it was close, the parasite only lost out by a hair but who cares anyway, it was down to quality in the end and Valleum are 100% pure and uncut and just ever so slightly more 'real' as in believable but that's not intended as a dig at anyone so here's hoping that 2009 will be better than 2008 for us all and bring back speakers corner, the madds is shit, the battle of the bands over the road was also shit as was the last gig in the dudley but that had nothing to do with dave so here's a toast to more success for dave and the dudley in 2009.
Funny, embarrassing moments, Juz, tut tut tut, one question, why? you is street, you is in the know but you is putting the hurt about, pleeease, no more, leave the bbc boy be, you knows for sure that targeting matt is good karma, for he's all knowing now.
During the latter stages of 2008 we've had The Lantern nights down the road and they've done ok and i fully intend to stagger down to the next one, keep em' coming lads and i apologize for not knowing much about you lot anymore, well not since the erm, the erm,you know, but I'm sure you're all killer with no filler now. Over in denbigh, Streams were building up to something big and then got let down by the age old 'drummer' problem during 2008 and that ranks, the fucking timing of the twat that's all i'm going to say but they get my nicest tune award anyway simply because it was the nicest tune.
2008 also saw one of the funniest online slanging matches, stand up Juz and take a bow, but wait Juz is 'street', he won't want the award so it goes to Matt instead, an equally worthy winner but wait again, he won't want it either, I mean there's cred and there's cred so Juz it is then.
