'Natter' [do you remember that?] -- which I thought was an ace idea, but we don't have the resources at Radio Wales, apparently. Ho hum. So, here is my NEW IDEA sparked by the creative brilliance of Akira the Don's blogs for the show. You [*YOU*] get to make a little documentary on your band using whatever tools are at your disposal and I get to broadcast them. You can do whatever you want. The only rules are: no longer than 7 minutes, no swearing or breaches of our guidelines, be as creative as humanely possible, include details on who you are and where you are and where people can find out more about you. You can use sound effects, your own songs, snatches of other people's songs [as long as you credit them so that we can register the tracks for PRS], interviews with your fellow band members, interviews with fans... anything you like. Think of it as a radio equivalent of the much-maligned myspace. I fully expect them to be as garish on the ear as myspace has a tendency to be on the eye. This is an opportunity for you to have some creative fun and up to 7 minutes of our valuable airtime. The fidelity of these *is*important. I don't expect pro quality, but we can't broadcast stuff that sounds like it was recorded at the bottom of a slurry-filled well. Are you up for it? ARE YOU? Please e-mail high quality, finished mini documentaries to: themysterytour@gmail.com And, if you want / need more info, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Here is the iPlayer link for this week's show: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jksxm/Adam_Walton_05_04_2009/Please check it out at your convenience. There's no need to listen to it all in one sitting. The iPlayer will bookmark where you are in a particular show [if you're accessing it from the same computer.] Also feel free [!] to share the link with friends and family. My aim with the show this year is to increase the audience so that all of these excellent musicians I'm lucky enough to play get the audience that they deserve. I'm not too proud to beg, and any little that you can do in that respect would be much appreciated. This week's show features: An exclusive session from one of my favourite Welsh bands of all time. The School started out as a casual outlet for Liz Hunt's sparkling girl pop masterpieces when she was in The Loves. But the attention and enthusiasm that those initial demo recordings garnered quickly led to a record deal with the excellent Elefant Records. The School will be treating us to their debut album before the end of the year. I. Cannot. Wait. Irrepressibly melodic girl pop kissed by the past greats. myspace.com/theschoolbandHuw Pooh continues delving into Dave Edmund's back pocket - playing something psychedelic, freak! and hands-down amazing from the Love Sculpture back catalogue. I start a couple of new & irregular series for the show, including joining hands with some of Wales's many community youth projects that use music to help and inspire young people. This week I speak to Michael from Grassroots in Cardiff and play some of the excellent young talent that has been passing through his studio. www.grassrootscardiff.com/We also have the first in our Record Shop Road-Trips, and our initial port of call is Cob Records in Bangor. Independent record shops in Wales like Cob, Spillers, Derricks, Diverse, Andy's, Rockaway etc. [please fill in the gaps] have done more to share excellent & indigenous music with the populace than the Welsh media. This series attempts, in its own small way, to shine a light on the enthusiasts who run these shops, the customers that patronise them, and - of course - the music that they stock. I'm joined in Cob by Soundhog, Dic Ben from The Peth and the staff, Owen and Alan. www.cobrecordsbangor.co.ukwww.thepeth.com/soundhog.co.ukOur Words of Wisdom come, this week, from, perhaps, an unexpected source. This man is a true rags to riches story. Pete Waterman left school unable to read and worked in a couple of dead-end jobs before his passion for music, and his collection or rare, imported American soul singles, evolved into a job as a DJ, which then led to Waterman forming his own record label. A lot of the rest is well-known history. To most indie artists, Waterman and his cohorts were antichrists. What's easily forgotten is that PWL was an independent label itself, one of the most successful in history. It's also conveniently forgotten that Pete Waterman managed a nascent version of the Specials, and spent time in Jamaica working with legends like Peter Tosh and Lee Scratch Perry. We haven't had a record producer in this slot before, either... so I asked Pete what his words of advice would be to anyone starting out who had commercial aspirations for their music www.pwl-empire.com/And we have our 2nd 'yourspace' mini-documentary courtesy of Cardiff-based electronic musician Underpass. underpass.org.ukI'm very keen to commission more of these 'yourspace' documentaries. In essence, I had 7 minutes of the show over to you so that you can do what you want with it [you have to record / edit / mix the 7 minute slot yourself.] You can fill it full of music, interviews with yourselves, your supporters, or do something much more esoteric, poetic and out there. More information can be found at the link below. If you have any questions, please e-mail me [contact details right at the bottom of this message.] adamthomaswalton.co.uk/?this_blog=449#blogIf you have any music / gig info / comments / suggestions / questions etc. please e-mail: themysterytour@gmail.com Please, send music as a high quality .mp3 with a short biography and a contact number. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00k2b70/Adam_Walton_26_04_2009/Last night's show [iPlayer link is above - click it!] was a monstrous exploration of Welsh electronic music. It wasn't a definitive guide to *all* electronic music in Wales -- there are far too many creative artists in Wales to fit under one measly 3 hour umbrella. However, I was lucky enough to speak to some very interesting and inspirational people. In session we had the new kings of the Welsh underground: Wrexham’s ‘Gallops’. They meld digital technology with traditional guitar / bass and drums and make and intriguing and intelligent noise. myspace.com/gallopsthebandHuw 'Pooh' Williams completes the Visage story. And plays something that might have some slap bass on it. In the interests of historical research, you understand! Electronic guru and international renowned chip tunesmith and circuit bender Matthew Applegate, aka pixelh8, gives us an oversight of electronic music. pixelh8.co.ukOur Words of Wisdom come from a brilliant composer, songwriter, and software artisan, Mr. Martin Carr. martin-carr.comThen I embark on a mini odyssey around North Wales to talk to a selection of the area’s most notable exponents of electronic music. Firstly, I’ll be in Llanfairfechan talking to Pete from Acid Casuals about their download chart-conquering recent EP’s and the surprisingly affordable and accessible technology they use to make their music. www.myspace.com/sombomThen, the short drive to Bethesda to speak to Concretedog… one of the Warm Data collective… a fascinating man who makes music that looks and sounds like it’s come from the peripheries of science fiction. concretedog.blogspot.comAfter that – our regular blogger Ann Matthews talks to me from her home on Anglesey about her solo album and how technology enabled her to fulfil the singular visions in her head. www.myspace.com/annologAberdare’s Little Eris shares a fascinating ‘yourspace’ with us. littleeris.comAnd Soundhog will be here. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00kc7dm/Adam_Walton_10_05_2009Hello! You can hear this week's show by clicking the iPlayer link above... please do so, as usual there is a welter of brilliant new Welsh music for you to enjoy, from a magpie's nest of different genres and parts of Wales. We have one of the most incredible sessions it has ever been my pleasure to broadcast, from The Keys. Imagine all the best bits of the Nuggets and Rubble compilations woven together with consummate skill, wit and emotive power. And then imagine that's it's a bit better than you're already imagining and you'll be getting close to the genius of The Keys. myspace.com/thekeysmusicWe have the first of our extended blogs from Wales' premier hip hop label, Associated Minds. There will be beats. There will be massive tunes. There will be the sound of elephants. associatedminds.comWales will be decorated by small-ish local festivals from now until September, and I'm keen to talk to whoever is fool enough to put themselves through organising them. This week, I speak to Rob and Harry from Kings Fest, a festival happening in Llanidloes from 22nd - 24th May. And we hear a couple of the local bands who are taking part. kingsfest.co.ukI also talk to Julian from Riot Act Promotions about the Love Music Hate Racism gig on in The Legendary TJ's, Newport on Saturday 16th May. www.myspace.com/riotactbassementliveHuw Pooh reminds us of Welsh music past in the shape of Victimize. Soundhog inspires us with a very crackly 7" from The Sorrows. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00krggs/Adam_Walton_31_05_2009/In a ruse so transparent it makes cellophane look bulky and substantial, I skived off last night's show because it was my 28th birthday* and I wanted to go to the pub**. Instead of the usual rich feast of mostly new Welsh music, I asked some*** of my favourite Welsh music people to help me compile a 3 hour compilation / mixtape. Their brief was to pick a song that had been inspirational to them, and one that you hear rarely on the radio. A host of excellent people contributed, in fact - here is a full list: Matt Hepburn, Frivolous Laura, Steve Redstripe, New City Order, Urban Legends, The School, Gruff Rhys, Bastions, The Boy, eViLs, Brad Gallops, Georgia Ruth Williams, Ann Matthews, Mal Pope, Caitlin & Helen Love, Son Capson, Jon Mam, Carl Bevan, Bethan Elfyn, ConcreteDog, Rob Glow, Spencer McGarry, Akira the Don, Pete Acid Casual, Sicknote / Tantrum, Organ Morgan, Simon Love, Le B, Huw Pooh, Nathan Soft-Hearted Scientist, Jo Bartlett, Alan Holmes, Mank, Soundhog, Martin Carr, Klaus Kinski, Sarah Howells, Bright Light Bright Light, Tommy 4Sticks, Associated Minds and Jamie Cee... There were a few who submitted songs & links for the show that didn't make the final edit -- simply because it was impossible to fit everything in. I tried. Oh, boy did I try. I'm very sorry if your choice didn't get in... next time, I promise. If I'm stupid enough to ever try this again. I'm not going to post a tracklist until the end of the week, simply because it's better to hear it without knowing what's coming up next. In an ideal world, it would have just been the music and the artists' links, but radio (i.e. production values) demand I pop up every 15 minutes, or so, like an unflushable turd to tell you what you're listening to in my best Alan Partridge-stylee. So, give it a go... it's like a random Spotify playlist with distended voices sprinkled over the top in order to evoke panic attacks / flashbacks. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I do hope you enjoy it. Happy June! * 28th since my 10th. This is how I have decided to start counting from now on. ** I ended up staying in to listen to the show. They don't have trifle in the pub. And there was a 48 piece folk orchestra squeezed in there. *** I drew up a list one very hungover Saturday morning (which also explains the very last bit of the show). The 'list' was far from definitive. Many of my favourite Welsh music people were never approached (because - devilish laugh! - I have other plans for *them*). Others submitted links & song choices that either fell outside the remit of this particular show, or duplicated artists that had already been chosen. Stitching it together was a nightmare, and that occupied all of my time for a whole week, which is why I have been somewhat remiss in my correspondence and personal hygeine. **** Use of appendix referenced by asterisks stolen off Mr Falkous. You can have them back now.

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00l951n/Adam_Walton_21_06_2009/If you click on the link anytime between now and 10pm next Sunday night [BST], you will get your ears intelligently mauled by the most compulsive exponents of what was once unimaginatively called 'alternative rock', Future of the Left. Their new album, 'Travels With Myself and Another' is out today and has justifiably garnered hyperbolic reviews from all quarters. In fact, if anyone can point me towards a review that have been less than adulatory I'd like to read it out of curiosity. The band's main vocalist, guitarist, synthist and lyricist, Andrew Falkous (no other cists that we know of) comes in to talk about the new album, too. Just to reiterate: if you are drawn at all to great, fierce pop songs that ring loud in the head and the heart, this album is your black hole. Once sucked in, you won't want to escape. It's out NOW. On the legendary 4AD Records - and it's one of the finest even they have ever released. Elsewhere: the word 'legendary' isn't inappropriate for 4AD Records, and it's positively ubiquitous in descriptions of one of my other guests, Ray Davies from The Kinks. Ray has a new album of chorally-arranged versions of [mostly] Kinks songs out, now, on Decca. He talks about that and also shares his Words of (considerable) Wisdom with us. RAY DAVIES! We have more session tracks from Sophie Mac, a beguiling acoustic songwriter from Pembrokeshire. Huw Pooh talks about Young Marble Giants. Soundhog talks about 50ft Hose. I try and squeeze as much great new Welsh music as possible into the bits in between -- and there is some great music about. Please share the iPlayer link with any music-minded friends / colleagues you have. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lf728/Adam_Walton_28_06_2009/Here is the iPlayer link and the playlist for this week's show. Contained therein, part 1 of an interview with poet Patrick Jones about his new album 'Tongues for a Stammering Time' (Anhrefn Records). It's a provocative and fascinating work. And Patrick talks about it with a great deal of passion. www.patrick-jones.net/We also have the first of our Poets in Residence, Rhys Trimble. I want to regularly feature new spoken word talent in Wales: whether they be performance poets / freestylers / or something much more traditional. If you're interested in being our Poet in Residence for a show [performing 3 'poems' that are a minute-and-a-half long, or shorter] please e-mail: themysterytour@gmail.com www.academi.org/list-of-writers/i/131957/Jo Bartlett, the co-founder of the Green Man Festival, talks about their wonderful festival in general, and this year's line-up in particular. And plays a selection of the artists who will appear on the bill (do not miss the Beth Jeans Houghton track, it manages to brood and shimmer with an otherworldly beauty at the same time. Some accomplishment.) www.thegreenmanfestival.co.uk/I talk to the strangely monikered 'Bagpipe Whiskey' about his thoroughly absorbing electronic and organic patchworks. myspace.com/bagpipewhiskeyHuw Williams resurrects the memories of The Modernaires - a damn fine new wave band from Bangor, circa '82. Soundhog delves into the history of Charisma back catalogue and pulls out something diverting from Topo D. Bil. soundhog.co.ukAnd I play some artful / raw / vicious and beautiful music in between. Hopefully, you'll like it a lot. I'm listening to it now and other than my bits, I think I can happily recommend it for your valuable attention. I'm still looking for bands who want to contribute a 'Yourspace' piece for the show. That's 7 minutes of the programme handed over to you to do with as you wish (as long as it complies with our guidelines). You could do a mini-mix of your songs; a little documentary on your music; something more esoteric and creative... it's entirely up to you. However, if you want to make one for the show, please get in touch first. themysterytour@gmail.com Which is also the e-mail address for your high quality .mp3's... please send any new recordings that you think are brilliant along with a short biography and a contact number. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lj47g/Adam_Walton_05_07_2009/This week's show is an unholy combination of peerlessly-crafted electronic beats; the tinnitus hell that can be unleashed by an octave splitter on a bass amp, the soothing sound of breadmakers, a virtuoso Japanese guitar instrumental, an impassioned poet with scary cages to rattle, genius Welsh prog rock & me battling (ineffectively) sleep deprivation. Or, in more pragmatic terms: Huw Williams on Neath's mind-blowing 60\s psychedelicists Eyes of Blue. Part II of my interview with Patrick Jones about his new album, 'Tongues for a Stammering Time.' patrick-jones.netAkira the Don's blog for July - the bad magic of banks, the good magic of breadmakers. akirathedon.comWales isn't too shabby in regards to inspirational electronic music and Holyhead's Dez Williams is one of our best. His half hour 'electronic collage' for this week's show is a tour de force of subtle and propulsive rhythmic creativity. It's a piece of music especially created for the show and I'd implore you to check it out if you have any interest in beats and electronic textures. antidetailsquad.co.ukmyspace.com/dezwilliamsmusicFinally, in the headlining slot, the man with the most fascinating record collection in North Wales, Soundhog, inspires us with Munetaka Inque & his Sharp Five. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00mw2wv/Adam_Walton_20_09_2009/Howdy. That link above contains 3 hours of the finest Welsh music rubbing its broad shoulders against excellent company from elsewhere. In particular, there is a splenetic, bruised and excellent session from Anglesey's DIY hardcore nuts, Bastions. Not only can they wield noise as well as anyone else in Wales, but they know how to twist it into something compelling. I love them. But I wouldn't want to live next door to their rehearsal room. myspace.com/bstnsFuture of the Left's Andrew Falkous leads us by the hand and takes us on a skip down the streets of Switzerland [it's not like that at all, but I do - perversely - like the image of Andy skipping... especially in Switzerland. All those mountains. It'd be great for the calves.] In actuality, this the first of Andy's weekly missives from Future of the Left's current world tour. And he pokes sticks at me until I play the Jesus Lizard. futureoftheleft.comI used a similarly well-sharpened stick to herd Adam from The Victorian English Gentlemens Club into our Cardiff studio where I tortured him with banal questions and asinine observations about their playful and stimulating second album, Love On An Oil Rig [available now on This Is Fake DIY Records]. Unlike other things that are described as 'playful and stimulating' there are no worries about having the right-sized batteries or going blind with this album. It's all the best colours of pop bashed around a bit [by Louise, by all accounts.] thevictorianenglishgentlemensclub.co.ukAnd the man who produced that ace album mentioned above, legendary record producer Charlie Francis [Pixies, REM, High Llamas etc.], shares with us his insightful Words of Wisdom. www.charlie-francis.co.uk/Cymruophile, subverters of glimmering pop, Golau Glau, dip us into their eddying and every-shifting Yourspace. myspace.com/golauglauHuw Pooh [he was the singer in the Pooh Sticks - please avoid reading anything questionable into the scatological nomenclature] continues teaching us our Masters Degree in Fascinating Welsh Music Past. However, our aged gramophone player is having none of it and rebels mere seconds into Pererin.
Soundhog doesn't feel quite so alone in his appreciation of Cliff Richard anymore. soundhog.co.uk
And there is music - much of it - as itemised below.
Please send me MORE MUSIC, because my appetite is insatiable, with a short biography and a contact number to:
themysterytour@gmail.com
And that e-mail address also desires your gig info, complaints and observations.
Have an excellent week!
Thank you / diolch yn fawr,
Adam

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00n1lqv/Adam_Walton_27_09_2009/I do this every flippin' week, under the impression that it's of some use to you and isn't regarded as pernicious, bandwidth-munching SPAM. I do it because I want you to glory in some of the fascinating music that's coming out of Wales at the moment, alongside some choice picks of goodness from the wide elsewhere. I do it because I think that earning yourself airplay on the wireless is still some kind of achievement. But I am biased. Of course I am. This week, if you are good enough to click the link above, you will discover: Colorama delightfully and acoustically in session. Three songs from these master musicians and songsmiths. For those of us who love our music yearning and cinematic, their current album, Magic Lantern Show, is one of the most accomplished of the year. myspace.com/coloramasoundFuture of the Left's Andrew Falkous reports in with his second tour blog. This time we hear about mythical Swiss riders, Cologne's bells and German crowds. Future of the Left are on tour throughout Europe and the USA until November. Tour dates available at: futureoftheleft.comOn 9Bach's resplendent and eponymous debut album [out now on Gwymon] you will hear traditional Welsh folk songs reimagined and reanimated. Which makes them sound like zombies, but that isn't the case at all. The arrangements glow. Lisa Jen's voice is one of North Wales' natural wonders. When The Guardian called the album "compelling" they were bang on the button. Lisa and Martin from the band have to put up with quite a bit of this type of verbose buffoonery as I attempt to interview them. myspace.com/9bachMelys are one of the most critically-lauded bands ever to come out of North Wales. They dwindled out of earshot after 2005's album 'Life's Too Short', but this week they return for a comeback gig [on Wednesday 30th September at Hendre Hall, Tal-Y-Bont, Bangor]. To celebrate this auspicious event I have asked them to share their Musical DNA with us. melys.co.ukLauded poet Dr Zoë Skoulding [editor of Poetry Wales] is our poet in residence. www.zoeskoulding.co.ukHuw Pooh delves back into Neath's past. Well, kind of. Buzz Linhart isn't exactly a native, but his connections to Wales are strong and his music is intriguing. Soundhog blows a trumpet [in suitably rambunctious fashion] for Keith Mansfield. And there are tunes -- including one of the finest Demos of the Week it has ever been my pleasure to award. ** Please send your music as a high quality .mp3 with a short biography and contact number to: ** themysterytour@gmail.com And if you've seen or heard anything amazing recently, please nudge me in the right direction... wherever it's from, whatever its supposed genre... hungry for ace music I am.
