Zoom used to make really cheap multi FX pedals for under £100. They had everything - delay, chorus, distortion etc... Can't promise anything mega high quality but it's a steal at that price.
Failing that, contact 'Academy of Sound' in Manchester (google search/yellow pages?). They've got tons of second hand stomp boxes and they do mail order.
As far as distorted noise goes, there's a really good stomp box called an 'XXL' - I think they're a bit under £100 - the pedal has an added 'warp' control for really FAT tones. Nice and crunchy.

do you know if the Digitech Grunge pedal is any good, especially for distortion wise?

Haven't used one of those. You'll just have to hunt around in shops I'm afraid.
To get an authentic grunge sound, it may be worth finding out what Kurt Cobain used in the first place. It'll probably be quite cheap.

I've just checked the pictures on the 'In Utero' album and Cobain appears to be using an old Boss stomp box.
It looks like a Boss Overdrive/Distortion OS-2. It's a yellow pedal. It has 4 controls - level, tone, drive and 'color' (apologies for the US spelling). The 'color' control is split between overdrive and distortion - if you turn it to the right it distorts, if you turn it to the left it produces thick overdrive. It works similar to the 'contour' pot featured on many Marshall amps. I think Alex Newport from Fudge Tunnel used to use one as well.
I've actually got one lying around in the back room. You can pick them up dirt cheap (sometimes as little as £20).
Another shop that can help in tracking down old stomp boxes is 'Johnny Roadhouse' in Manchester. I haven't been there for ages, so I don't know whether they're still in business, but they used to have a big display unit by the counter that was full of old second hand pedals. Do a google search maybe?

Just done another check. Cobain used the following distortion pedals (and they're WELL cheap) -
Boss DS-1 distortion
Boss DS-2 Turbo distortion
They're pretty similar to the Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion, but you'll just have to use your ears to find which one you like best.
Try and find second hands if you can. These things are built to last - it's hard to find a damaged one. I'm still using Boss pedals I bought in the late 80s.

Yeah, the DS-1 is a really good cheap pedal, a bit trashy at times. Some of the Danelectro overdrive/distortion pedals are really nice, but they offer a more vintage sound. If you want a quite thrashy high-gain sound you might wanna look into the Boss Metal Zone, even though I personally hate them, I can see their point of existence. If you want to be an absolute fucking legend you might wanna try out the USA Big Muff Pi. Multi Fx distortions tend to sound really cheap and thin, I'd avoid getting one of these, especially if you have no real interest in what the other effects have to offer.

I use a Boss Blues Driver (BD2? Something like that). It's a nice crunchy stomp box that's pretty versatile - you can get anything from a lighter fuzz for punkier/indie stuff, or you can whack it right up for some lovely thick distortion good for a more metal/Black Sabbath kinda sound. Plus, unlike the Big Muff (something I used to own and was awesome, no doubt) you can still palm-mute for those more chuggy riffs. I dunno if anyone's ever tried to palm mute with a Big Muff, but the sound you achieve is something akin to a fart in a wet paper bag. Lovely.

Have a look on ebay for a Keeley Modded Boss DS1, superb pedal- also check out the original Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer & again the Keeley Modded version. Better still, buy all three. Connect them up to a Triaxis pre-amp & Mesa 50:50 Power amp, and jizz everywhere
