Megedeth
Hotel California, Birkenhead 6/6/07 [/size] (review n pic by MWJ) Always enjoy visits here, and as it’s open til 3am and had some people to see plus had never seen a Megadeth tribute band before it all seemed a good opportunity to continue the bender. They were the first “proper” band I saw (fwk that 4Q bollocks) at the Manchester Apollo back in the late 80’s, then at Donington soon after, but had heard next to nothing of their more recent stuff as I felt the stuff from “holy wars” onwards was descending into guitar wankery. Or just more so. Anyway, they came on pretty immediately, but with stuff I didn’t know. While the front man was a long-hair traditional metaller the rest of his band were all skinheads which made a bit of an odd sight but did not detract from their playing obviously. The clunking “wake up dead” was a welcome flashback but then as I mulled over what I’d most like to hear from the back catalogue they played it, “devils island”. That plus “Liar” and “in my darkest hour” taking me back to an old Blacklisted cover had me quite satisfied and I did recall how enjoyable some of this old raw thrash was, if you could take Dave Mustaines annoying vocals. The more recent material was more polished, better structures but also cleaner, sanitised, accessible, making me think more of latter-day Judas Priest than anything else so I don’t think I’ve missed much there really. Back in the car, checking out those thin flung red ribbons laid out before me, like a roadmap of hell…
