'We travelled three hours to get here'
Explained the Dandelion Killers as they burst into their romp of a set.
You wouldn't have thought you were at something special after performing a head count. Sixteen to start with, about 25 once this band from Ross-on-Wye had finished.
Not screamo enough for the current Blu crowd and far too loud for anyone's ears. From the side of the PA stack - which is where the sound engineer is perched (due to room size constraints) the actual sound is brilliant. Unfortunately out front, the sound is loud enough to shred your ear drums, and that's not in the awesome way - its in the 'we'd best stay away' way. The simple solution for the sound man is to get that brilliant sound and just turn the master volume down 2 or 3 notches.
So Blu is going through a bit of a transition. When the venue war was on, the new promoter stuck on loads of screamo bands, which is fair enough, but you marginalise your audience and drive away those who have a broader taste in music. Nowt wrong with a bit of screamo now 'n' then - but not down the throat.
No, you won't find ticket touts outside, maybe the reversal where they'll be paying you to come in, but hopefully the seasonal period will lure the stay aways back out and give them something to remain and keep on coming out.
On a mini tour - The Dandelion Killers set feels like a statement of intent. When they plough through their repertoire you're wondering whether they're thundering on to get off the stage as soon as possible or giving it all to the twenty heads watching them.
Either way, they have enough dynamics and strong tunes to be a national treasure.
