Last night I went to the final leg of the Ruff and Ready Tour 2008, in Liverpool! It was a fantastic gig, really personal with probably only about 60 people but it wasn't like people stood at the back or by the bar everyone really went for it for every band!
We arrived a little late and only caught the last few songs of Londoners The JB Conspiracy. They played really energetic ska that got everyone bouncing but at the same time a really epic sound with some wicked vocal harmonies, clearly a bunch of really talented musicians.
Up next were local boys Chief. They played excellent hardcore punk a cross between Gallows and early AFI. They played with fantastic energy and at breakneck speed throughout the set. Clearly a very politically motivated band they chatted about government, education and recycling to name just a few. The song Pushing the Green was probably their most impressive.
Next came the acoustic skills of Chris Murray from Los Angeles. The self-proclaimed One Man Ska Band played a quite Jack Johnsenesque beat and it was a welcome chill out after the ferocity of the earlier bands. He is playing a few more NorthWest gigs over the next few days and is definitely worth a watch.
The final act of the evening were the ones I was most excited about. Sonic Boom Six came out to huge applause and burst into one of their newer songs. I'd seen the SB6 twice before in the past but there performance again fantastic! They played a mixture of their old and new stuff and the crowd was insane. They said that they'd missed being in Liverpool and you could tell they meant it and were joined onstage by the rest of the bands for the last song of the evening Operation Ivy's Sound System. It looked an emotional end to the Ruff and Ready Tour 2008.
