I used to work for the Satanic entity that is HMV. To be honest, it's not so bad to get your CDs on the shelves in there.
It's a little known fact that they actually stock local music if they suspect it will sell. You'd have to organise a meeting with the store manager and if he thinks you'll boost sales with a new release, he can get your stuff on the same racks as the mainstream stuff.
With a band such as Global Parasite, I would suspect that you lot could drum up quite an interest in your recordings. Judging by the success of the Dirty Weekend you lot know a thing or two about promotion. Only thing is - I don't quite know how the pay scale works. I know Bossk did OK out of HMV, but other bands didn't fare so well. Maybe see how that works with the manager.
It's also worth considering that releases by Extreme Noise Terror, Exploited, Napalm Death, GBH and many other bands from the world of extreme punk have long been available at this particular morally bankrupt music retailer.
It's all down to the manager - if he's a capitalist bumhole forget it, but if he's someone who had to convert to the darkside from an independent record store (who went out of business because of HMV), he may be very helpful to your cause.
They're not all bad - it's just that the HMV manager barrell contains more rotten apples than good ones, but if you find a crusty old Ned's Atomic Dustbin fan who supports alternative music they tend to be very helpful.

We will distro some ourselves, but, Pumpkin recs have distro with Plastic Head (they distro the label Fat Wreck Records stuff, Killing Joke, and a load of others i forget now) so where it ends up is down to them although the quantity of the things put out will be small (small from the perspective of "the business" yuch that word) so i don't think we need to worry about it too much. Personally i'd rather not see the album in HMV, I despise the place, apart from cheap dvds, they mark up beyond belief, on occasions where I do go in there (generally to put flyers behind punk cds haha) i feel rather uneasy!

Agreed. The mark up is considerable.
Even the independents are often very expensive (justifiably so in many cases). Music retail is becoming quite cut-throat and for my sins, I've actually paid more for new releases because I wanted to buy it from an independent store (who actually stock interesting records) and not a boring corporate store who will ultimately put them out of business. I may be misguided, but I feel the time will come when it will be very difficult to buy anything on CD or vinyl that isn't released through a major, MAJOR company, and that would be very sad. If the Indoor market in Canterbury goes down the toilet, I'll be quite upset. No more rare or deleted albums - just boring stuff from the charts.
Interestingly it's seldom mentioned that supermarkets often sell CDs and DVDs for a 'knock down' price at a calculated loss - they sell them for less than they're worth. The reason they do this is to get people through the door to buy milk and bread etc. Once they've got consumers by the nads they offer more 'bargains' in order to maintain 'customer retention'. Tesco got into trouble for it a few years back.
I'm very familiar with Plastic Head - They distributed to HMV and we had to phone them occasionallly. Their releases were a fucking bastard to log onto the system! Occasionally there was no cat number on the CD and in some cases we had vinyl with nothing on it at all - just a tiny cat number near the centre of the disc although it was almost always obscure dance music. They were quite efficient with punk and metal though so I think you're safe.
I often wonder if they dealt with certain record labels because they knew it would be a pain the arse to corporate chains. Just send HMV 300 mysterious records with no cat number and waste their time for a laugh. Sounds like the perfect distribution for Global Parasite!
I think I've been working in retail too long... I feel ill... urggh!
