The trouble with putting on a festival that is based on the concept of staging several gigs at different locations within a town is that your potential audience inevitably becomes dispersed.
As a punter you are then left with the question of which gig(s) you are going to attend and it is a question that can leave a gig like the one at The Menai depleted of customers simply because other factors kick in such as "where are my mates going to be" and "there's no local band I know on the bill".
Having experienced the joys of The Gallops, the 4 Sticks and Ryan Kift previously, I can vouch for the fact that on a musical level it must have been one hell of a night.
Unfortunately we all know that musical excellence is no guarantee of a full house and I think it's becoming more and more apparent to those of us who put on gigs that, while we won't ever become part of the pay-to-play bollocks beloved of certain so-called prestige venues, we are nonetheless more and more inclined to appraise at least one of the bands on any bill on the basis of what kind of audience they are likely to generate off their own backs.
Idealistically it shouldn't have to be that way but most promoters will tell you that that is now the reality of how things work.
