Wales has a great tradition of psychedelic pop music, stretching back to Eyes of Blue and Amen Corner, through the mighty Man band, to modern exponents like Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Super Furry Animals. There are dozens of lesser-known bands scattered amongst these legends. The only real unifying factor between them is that they write memorable, narcotic music that frequently takes unexpected and under-explored paths.
Race Horses continue this fine tradition. Their recent single, 'Cake', manages to sound both like a lost West Coast classic and simultaneously 'now'. The recent sell-out crowd at the Eisteddfod in Bala would validate Race Horses' modernity: the end of the set mutated into a frazzled techno wig out... definitely unexpected. If they do the same at Telfords Warehouse on Friday 28th August, sorry for spoiling the surprise... there will be plenty of others, for sure.
You can hear the single and read numerous glowing reviews at their myspace page:

Here's the list of influences from that page:
Dexy's Midnight Runners Roy Orbison Fiery Furnaces The Turtles Beach Boys Sparks The Stooges Velvet Underground The Beatles Gorky's Zygotic Mynci Serge Gainsbourg Clifford T Ward Queen The Shaggs Patti Smith The Libertines George Formby Syd Barrett (& early Pink FLoyd) David Bowie Joe Meek Elvis Costello Deerhoof Love The Kinks Harry Nilson Jimi Hendrix Gilbert & Sullivan The Only Ones Os Mutantes Fats Domino Pep le pew Arnold Schoenberg ABBA Kate Bush ELO Dungen Anthony and the Johnsons Tim Ten Yen Kevin Ayers The Fall Harry Partch CAN Suicide Jerry Yester & Judy Henske Meic Stevens ELVIS
They're not exaggerating or over-selling themselves. Theirs is a luminous love of pop music, and it's a love they're keen to share.
I'll be DJ'ing a varied mix of essential tunes before and afterwards [until 2am - band on at 10:30pm]
Entry is FREE before 9pm, £4 thereafter [FREE all night with a student card].
