hats off for a hilarious critique of what was 2008. I must however state for the record, that, disapointing as 2008 was for 'the north wales scene', 2008 for us (Homespun) was a successful year, we signed an 'online download deal' (WHICH IN ACTUAL FACT IM SORRY TO SAY, WASNT A DOWNLOAD DEAL AT ALL). Posting 'buy our album' on myspace is called plugging/advertising, Which is required with having an album out really doesnt it! As for party at the beach! We actually requested the barriers for our safety, or maybe the organisers just put them up to make the thing look like an actual event which would make more sense really wouldnt it? The half empty bottle of bourbon i was staggering soberly about with was infact delicious homemade mint julep, and was consumed by myself, der bomber and carpet, and sadly featured in no photos or videos, Moving on to the real life shameless audience plant. We did infact plant members of our families and social circle in to the crowd so that when our manager filmed the gig ( for live footage, requested by our record label) it would look like we were headlining leeds 2008 but the final footage looked like a shit wet day on prestwatyn beach sooooooo....... Im sorry again to inform that youtube did not receive any footage of the beach party, gutted i was, what with the world missing out on re-living a cringeworthy rant, must of been wierd for you seeing someone 'onstage' genuinely emoting after seeing failsafe doing their thing 'so well', maybe if i grow my fringe longer, get blue and blonde streaks and get some star tattoos my pain will articulate itself more clearly. The sound guy did dish out a bollocking as did the organiser, understandibly so as i did damage a mic stand with my girly swing of the bass, but both were politely informed that they would be 'knocked out by a particular member if this onslaught continued, at which point may i add that their tone and phrasing became distinctively less authoritive. SHOULD YOU BE PROUD OF US? ARE YOU PROUD OF US? WE DONT ACTUALLY CARE! All we care about is 2009, drinking bourbon, refusing photo requests, banning friends and family from local gigs, having our barn sized egos fed, massaged and masturbated on a regular basis, remaining to be disliked by a dying 'scene' whilst similtaneously being championed by the music industry in the usa, and OF COURSE!!!!! shamelessly promoting our album (which is insane i know!) out now digitally and on hard copy @ itunes, amazon, play, dpluse recordings store and all other good online outlets. So thanks for buying all those copies of 'sexreadymindcontrol' mr critic!. our egos can sleep soundly knowing you have a copy. I GENUINELY WISH GOODLUCK TO ALL THE BANDS MR CRITIC SLAGGED OFF, AND THE ONES HE DIDNT. I HOPE YOU ALL GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET FROM THIS JOKE OF A COASTLINE. I HOPE YOUR ASPIRATIONS BECOME REALITY THIS YEAR, BECAUSE WE GOT OVER THE FIRST HURDLE THIS YEAR AND IT FEELS WICKED, SO KEEPING ON TRUCKING. THE BADDEST BADMAN OF ALLTIME IN THE UNIVERSE EVER. MR DAMIEN CRAIG SAYELL OF HOMESPUN HERES TO 2009

Nicely put Damien, although a little restrained by your standards . Not that it is anybody's business besides the band and their record label but the deal is not a download only deal. But a full deal with the backing of some of the industries most influential music companies i.e. Sony/BMG, Universal and INGrooves. Homespun have also signed a publishing deal, which if you know how the music business works could be more profitable than any record deal. For those wannabe rock stars out there who think that once a band signs a deal they have "made it" I suggest you wake up and smell the coffee, as Damien quite rightly point out, they are over the first hurdle and now the hard work has started. Many of the bands in the "scene" haven't even made it to the starting blocks yet or are too busy lacing up their designer trainers. As for an advance (which is little more than a loan), they are few and far between these days. Larger labels only pay these out once you have a proven track record of selling - Sony suggest (dPulse Recordings) pass on to them only bands they have that is selling in the tens of thousand with a fan base of the same kind of numbers. Distributors now want at least 5000 download sales before they will under take "proper" national distribution. Large labels do not want to develop artist like they used to, when they were owned by music lovers not share holders. The same share holders who want to see every release turn to profit in shortest amount of time. Yes in an ideal world every band would have a label. One that could throw ten of thousands of pounds at them but these days you have to grab whatever chances you can. And of course woe betide any band from north Wales having a modicum of success, because the scene will rise up against them for selling out. And for those of you who think I'm taking sides because I manage Homespun, you are mistaken, as I am no longer their manager, although I do represent their label in the UK. I've heard it said that I'm not interested in bands from n.Wales anymore, this may be true because in my humble opinion there are only about 6 or 7 bands in the whole of n.Wales, that I know of, (and that's n.Wales not Rhyl/Colwyn Bay) who have what it takes to sell more than a handful of Cdrs to their mate! If you like the scene, support that scene but don't go calling those who wish not to be part of it. The world is bigger than the n.Wales coast.

thanks martin, i agree with everything you wrote. and its fine with us if people think we selling out because in the real world selling out is what thick people call 'actually making progress' and i was'nt proclaiming to be hard? just informing you of a conversation that arose after our 'bollocking'. but lets be honest its not really much of an insult having you 'hardness/masculiniyquestioned by a person who can only get things off their chest in anonyimity. goad us all you want, the only fact that matters is , that when were gone from here to better things you'll still be sat behind a pc slagging of kids in bands, YOU EPITOMISE WHATS WRONG WITH THE NORTH WALES MUSIC SCENE, ALWAYS NEGATIVE, IF YOU WANT TO CHAMPION BANDS THAT ARE ALWAYS GONNA STAY IN N.WALES, THATS FINE, BUT DONT FUCKING TRY TO PUT US DOWN FOR ACHIEVING WHAT EVERY BAND IN THE WORLD SETS OUT TO DO......I THINK IM BEING REASONABLE HERE, AND YOU MY FRIEND ARE NOT!

Another long one, sorry. Now, now Dave, I was pulling your pisser, you know I'm with you till the end brother and besides, it's such a massive part of the bands identity so it'd be stupid to ease off now, I mean what the fuck will Hubble do then ? And talking of identity, that's something that a lot of bands seem to happily neglect or merely pay lip service to, I'm talking 'image' here and although there are one or two people on here who assume that I'm somehow against the local music scene or any local band that gets lucky enough to enjoy any success, progression or praise outside of the area, trust me that's simply not the case, in fact, I do think that as far as bands go we have a fairly healthy selection that seem to understand the issue of 'image' and what it really means. If I can use your band as an example, I don't see anything contrived or obviously deliberate in your make up, I think it's essential to be both clear and focused with regard to the way any band markets itself, especially those that are targeting an established audience such as the 'Punk' faithful or even the hardcore dance scene, it's not only important to look right in publicity shots and promo work it's imperative to be 100% 'believable'. I mean how many times have we all bought into something that's turned out to be just another badged up/re packaged fake, another marketing till ringer ? everyones been there and it sucks big time and as you know in the punk scene that'd20be the kiss of death for any band found wanting in the cred stakes. So when I see pics of Matt with his Mohawk or you with an angry facial gesture with two fingers up dressed in classic punk ware I know what I'm buying into and I know it's real because you're consistent, if I see Matt in the street he's got the hair going on, the fucked up jeans, the slogans and when I see him on stage, he's exactly the same, so it all rings true, it's believable, you're selling it everyday and that's exactly what it's all about, still not sure about hubbs though, ha ha. Now when you take a closer look at the bands that I've highlighted for praise it comes as no surprise to find they're all at it, they're living it, breathing it and being it 24/7, just consider Valleum walking down to the post office, do you think any of them would be kitted out in a Puma trackie with a NY city baseball cap and designer trainers, no way, that same worn out mohair jumper and tatty head of hair that's strutted about on the stages across North Wales and beyond is also the choice of attire for everyday life, and it has to be because anything else would make it stink of 'fake' and in no way are Valleum fake, same goes for the others, Carpet, it's the generation X look, it's Nirvana all the way but it's what they do and it's what's expected, it ties into the music, it gives the whole thing credence, I mean even the 4 sticks have a go, it's an obvious collage of the whole MC5/'Ramones' thing with a nod to the tragic Gram Parsons wasted cowboy scene but I'll bet my arse those kids live it too, every fucking day, those boots are fucked because they don't wear anything else, it's not a hobby to those bands, it's a way of life and as 'naff' or as crap as that sounds, it's how it fucking should be. All that might seem a little bit 'ideal' world and fairy tale bullshit but it's fucking true. Imagine Johnny Depp going for a pizza dressed up like captain jack, you'd laugh your tits off because he's an actor, he plays roles, he plays different characters and his job is to make it believable on screen, no one expects him to really dress up like a pirate in real life, that's just his costume, his stage wear and see, that's the mistake so many bands make, Stage Wear, oh no no no, please not stage wear, Homespun have stage wear and that's a fact, the only time those shirts come out is gig time just like captain Jacks pirate hat, when I said they'd been exposed as the David Brent of the local music scene I was mindful of a few facts, You'd told me that you're signed, you invited me to the big gig on the beach, expecting thousands there you said, you told the local paper that you're off to the USA, you've been bullshitting me for years but I desperately wanted your stories to be true, you know the ones, the big fat ones, But it's just not real is it lads, it's all fake, just like the bassist says ' we wanted it to look like we were headlining leeds', it's all bullshit, I mean come on, there was probably 30/40 max watching you during that gig and you had that poor women dressed up in stripes, singing in the rain for no other reason than to sell more bullshit to your new label, big question, why? and for fucks sake lose that '10 facts about our album' shite from your myspace, I distinctly remember you moaning about the current crop of new bands that have taken to recording using a lo-fi 'live' feel, d'you remember ? and low and fucking behold if you're not championing that very same technique a month or so later, albeit in an obviously misunderstood context, tut tut, but it's all bollocks, see I really don't think you can get a lo-fi thing going when you're using digital modelling amps such as the 'line6' stuff, see, they're not real amps, they're just designed to simulate the real thing, what you unforgiveabley call 'an honest sound', an honest sound ? my arse, there's nothing honest about simulators, now where have I heard that before? not real, fake, bullshit, ring any bells? oh yes and while I'm looking at your myspace page, one last thing, ahem ! The MC5 ? The fucking MC5? since when ? Oh you mean the one with the swearing ? Kick out the Jams, Rage against the machine mother fuckers ? you really should buy yourself an MC5 album or two, they're a fucking 60's blues based garage band and you're a 90's pop punk band, I don't hear anything but out of date Green Day and Offspring style yank rock, and you know what , that stinks of something bad lads,I'm not sure what but it stinks all the same, I'm asking myself, where on earth do you think they've got that from, no no no, you would'nt be so fucking obvious would you ? it's fucking blatent, there's no cred in that lads, none whatsoever, Tut tut, you're not mates with Hubble now are you? pleeeease, no more. Come on, check this out and squirm in embarrassment, it's lifted straight from your myspace page, spelling mistakes and all. Just thought it may be of use / interest to fans critiques and anyone else. Homespun. we made our debut album ourselves, interesting facts: 1. All drum , gtr, bass, and vocal takes are all done in 1 take (except drop-ins for added sections or say we wanted to change the sonic value of a part. 2. We recorded everything through a studio-diamond studio 8-2 mixing desk with NO compression at all and mixed everything (70s style) hands on the desk and make it all sound right before we record. this includes the whole kit in one well mixed sterio channel (lots of work) + the gtrs and bass are our actual amps (line6 sterio out) *no micing amps* (you hear what we hear) it's called an honest sound. 3. All gtrs and bass are played STOOD UP!!! WE DO NOT SIT DOWN at all to record slamming gtr parts. We also play it all live and actualy stomp effects in and out as we play, this includes gtr / bass solos. 4. We scream at each other and throw out at least 3 times more material than we release. 5. We had no idea how to engineer, produce, mix, master before we made this record. 6. We use Cubase sx2 and wavelab on our £200 studio PC 7. Every thing on this record means something. =0 A8. We pulled all-night studio shifts to make up for the fact that we had to work day jobs and figure out how to make stuff sound good (WTF is a 16 bit dither!?) that kind of thing. 9 We deliberatly made the album low-fi so we didn't sound too polished. (think iggy and the stooges and give them modern amps) 10. We really hope people enjoy and "Get" this album, it's our baby, born of our dismay at the so called music scene and all the fakers aswell as including songs about ourselves and the people we know. We wanted NO album fillers so every song is our favorate in it's own way and we slam these tracks out live like we mean it, so we hope this conveys. biglove people, thanks for all the support and thanks to every one that has bought the "sexready mind contol" album and/or the "badman" single. [Homespun] Oh pleeeease, that's just so fucking naff it's brilliant, it's David Brent and Alan Partridge Brilliance !
Yes Neil, I did forget to mention one or two other bands in my original post but for me the spirals are/were just average pub fodder anyway and the racketeers had a huge one man ego problem,I mean, boy is that dude deluded? so I kept to the stuff that I'd had the pleasure of witnessing in the flesh that had struck a chord with me, and yes I should have give a mention to Adam Walton, in fact, I'll go so far as to say that most if not all of the local bands that currently take up valuable real estate on my ancient ipod, from as far back as the20black swans to the streams have come to my attention via Adams Show or your very own podcast, so I'll thank you both for that and hope you keep it coming, hey and I'm sorry if you think I've been unfair with my assessments of the local scene with regard to the bands that currently tread the boards around here but I stand by my beliefs that it's only the ones that are actually 'real' that are worthy of any head space, the rest are just making up the numbers (or clogging up the system if you prefer). Sorry also to Sona, I forgot to say that you're a really nice bunch of lads anyway. Well, now, having given Matts question some consideration regarding the appreciation for Valleum on a national scale, yes I agree that in an ideal world they'd be massive but I think to be fair that's not what they're aiming for, I'd guess that the 'crusty' scene for want of a better term, is dwindling daily, having peaked with the levellers years ago, it's now more a hard core following thing not unlike the punk scene that you ply your trade in so courting major labels or trying to break into the mainstream is probably best avoided, It's probably all down to that thing called 'cred' again, well I think so anyway. Yes they have the material, the whole package but it's probably just a bit out of date for mainstream investment, who cares anyway, they're still the dogs bollocks, Eh, Dave, My wife Now, eh Dave. Duncan Black, sorry I missed your show, I can't believe it, I would have loved to have seen that, I was only across the bridge that night, so next time I'll be sure to catch the show, have you got that youtube video sorted yet ?

The video footage is currently in a secret missile base 5 miles beneath Tom's house.
Please forward any requests to have these important documents released to the public (via the Ministry of Defence) to the following address -
666 Tom's House, Somewhere near Neil's House, Probably Rhyl, North Wales, LL19 n-n-n-nineteen
P.S - You were across the Bridge? A Bangor resident no less! Maybe we will uncover your identity one day. You missed a really good night (sorry!). Jack Sharp was incredible, although not everyone will get it as usual.

Hmmm..
But what if i shave my mohawk off (which i have haha!) and wear a tracksuit? Does that make me less credible, does it mean I'm no longer a punk? Not particulary, actually not at all. It's in the heart and mind mate. I hear what your saying, totally, but I think your not quite getting something. Gary is for real. I know the guy very well, it would appear you don't. I personally agree with the stage-wear thing, but do you think it really makes a band less credible? You seem to think you know alot, and you do in some respects, but whether you get it is another thing.

Additionally I'd like to see more rastafarians playing Kraftwerk covers and Aled Jones fronting the Dillinger Escape Plan. You'd be suprised. Espcially in the hardcore punk scene. Does a tracksuit = chav then? Dammit I'll have to re-evaluate my identity, because I have a pair of tracksuit bottoms, does this mean I am chav now?

you are correct about me slagging lo-fi, sound off, but as i recall, was refering to bands in the chart like the libertines and other god awful bands that spend thousands of pounds to make a record thats sounds like an album that cost £500. As for being fake mate, let me let you in on a few facts you wont find on myspace...i left home (s.wales) at the age 20, i moved to north wales to play music in homespun i left my family friends, cushy job, girlfriend, everything i had to try to achieve my lifes ambition. i arrived on my own with no job and £400 in my bank account, i found a place to live got a job, and started getting back in to 'bandlife'. Within the first year i lost two jobs, my girlfriend, my family life, became homeless and was nearly committed to a mental home twice!!! I spent 4 months crashing on floors, sleeping on bus stops, smelling like a tramp i lost 2 1/2 not eating for three days at a time, not showering for weeks at a time, sold a £1200 amp to tk music for £200 to play a to 3 people (no exaggeration), at a gig that didnt pay, , i then sorted my life out, got a job, somewhere to live, became more stable mentally found a girlfriend, played a showcase for emi in london got a record deal in homespun, ALL OF THIS WAS DONE OFF MY OWN BACK, NOT IN THE COMFORT OF A FAMILY HOME, WITH 3 MEALS A DAY SKY PLUS XBOX AND BROADBAND SO I COULD SLAG PEOPLE OFF ONLINE!NO STUDENT LOANS OR DSS, I STILL DONT HAVE TV IN MY FLAT, I SPEND MY SPARE TIME READING BOOKS, LISTENING TO MUSIC (YES THE MC5 AND THE STOOGES AND OTHER SEMINAL BANDS) AND WRITING MUSIC....MY WHOLE LIFE REVOLVES AROUND OUR BAND SO FUCK YOU MATE..YOU DONT KNOW ME, YOU DONT KNOW US....ID SAY ID SACRIFICED ALOT AND EXPERIENCED ENOUGH SHIT TIMES IN THE LAST 5 YEARS TO BE CLASSED AS 'REAL' AND IF WEARING A PIN STRIPE SHIRT MAKES ME A FAKE THEN SOMETHING IS DRASTICALLY WRONG WITH THE WORLD...THE ONLY THING THAT BROUGHT ME TO WHERE I AM TODAY.. IS DRIVE, AMBITION AND AN UNDYING PASSION FOR MUSIC. THIS BAND IS MY/OUR LIFE/LIVES! I DONT WANT A MOHAWK, OR TO WEAR RIPPED JEANS ..WANNA KNOW WHY? BECAUSE IF I DID ID BE TRYING TO BE SOMETHING IM NOT, (FAKE) THE MYSPACE LIST IS 100% TRUE, MARTIN HAS SEEN OUR HOMESTUDIO, AND CAN VOUCH FOR THAT. SO IN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IMP! AS MUCH AS YOUR PATHETIC LITTLE MIND WANTS IT TO BE, THE RECORD DEAL, THE AMERICAN TOUR, THE 'MYSPACE FACTS' ITS ALL TRUE FELLA EVERY FUCKING WORD OF IT!!!!!! SORRY TO DISAPOINT, BUT YOU POST AS BEEN ANSWERED AND YOUR OPINION HOLDS NO WATER.

... and just to verify what Damien has said about America and Homespun doing gigs there. One or two things I feel I ought to mention for the doubters out there
America is in the grand plan of things as far as the label is concerned but these thing cost money. Sponsors are currently being sought but as we all know the world is having a few money problems at the moment. Remember the guys have to eat, sleep and travel. We aren't talking a couple of hundred quid for a trip to London here.
The pound continues to crash against the dollar meaning it is getting more expensive for Brits to travel to US.
Unlike the UK's open door policy as far as over seas artists are concerned, the USA makes more or less impossible for UK artists to get work visas for USA unless they can prove they have "international success and appeal". Many UK chart acts are facing the same problem. Granted Homespun could travel over there on a normal holiday visa but given the high profile of the shows they have been invited to do the chances are they would be deported -- it doesn't matter if you are earning money or not, you can not perform without a performers work visa.
So before you go jumping to conclusions and claiming everything is bullshit try getting some facts.
To be honest I don't know why I bother answering any of the comments made on here other than the fact the same "prophets of doom" who enjoy pulling bands down are the same people who have killed a real music scene in n.Wales. Perhaps I don't have any street credibility among the "keeping it real" set, but do I care? Not really because no matter what they say I'm still making my living from the music business, have done for many years and am not some wannabe bullshit artist.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with a bit of stagewear if it suits,do you think Dave Vanian sat at home watching tele dressed as a vampire,The Jam did their ironing in suits & skinny ties or Demis Roussos went to the kebab shop dressed as a fat woman........shit......scrap what I just said, stagewear sucks.
